I just want to acknowledge that the idea of the Eschaton, and some of the phraseology the big E uses in Michael Profit, is an homage to the wonderful novelist Charles Stross‘s incarnation of the Eschaton in his Eschaton series, which consists of two amazing (and fun!) novels, namely Iron Sunrise and Singularity Sky (buy them here!). Although I do feel certain that my Eschaton isn’t Mr. Stross’s (and that this will be obvious to the reader by story’s end ;->), the idea around It and Its birth germinated from his fine work, for which I am very grateful.
